Hladek, a senior at Corona del Mar High, and Matthews, a junior, are used to winning big tournaments. They won the CIF Southern Section doubles title last year.

Hladek usually plays doubles during the regular season, while Matthews plays singles. But last Saturday, they came up with another impressive win, taking the CIF doubles division at the Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament with a 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Santa Barbara High’s Chris Ho and Billy Grokenberger.

“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet,” Hladek said Tuesday.

Ho and Grokenberger, the defending Ojai champions, were also the same team the CdM duo beat in the CIF Southern Section championship match last May.

Hladek and Matthews didn’t drop a set and didn’t even get broken on serve in five matches en route to the finals. Once there, they were down a set, and down 5-4 in the second set, before rallying to win.

It was the first time CdM had won in the CIF division at “the Ojai,” since Carsten Ball and Garrett Snyder won in doubles in 2002.
