THEATER:Youth Theater delivers
Following the American premiere of “The Master of the House” and before the world premiere of “The Verdi Girls,” the kids will be taking over the Laguna Playhouse.
The playhouse’s Youth Theater has a pair of projects ticketed for May, the first one arriving next weekend and the second hot on its heels.
First up will be “Anne of Green Gables,” the stage adaptation of the children’s novel by L.M. Montgomery. It’s the story of a young girl adopted into a Canadian family who were expecting a boy.
“With her fiery temper, love of melodrama and romance and penchant for misadventures, Anne brings laughter and happiness to the home she has longed for all of her life,” commented director Kelly Herman.
“Anne of Green Gables” will be previewed Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m., with regular performances scheduled Fridays at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. through May 20. Tickets are priced from $16 to $20.
‘Heroes’ production
Sandwiched between weekends of “Anne” will be the playhouse’s Theater for a New Generation project titled “Everyday Heroes” by Laurie Brooks, to be directed by the playhouse’s Youth Theater director, Donna Inglima.
This drama — part of a series of social issue issues for teens, parents and educators — focuses on brothers Kurt and Win, who have spent their young lives protecting their alcoholic mother.
When an accident leads to a devastating fire, they are catapulted into a media frenzy and Win becomes a reluctant hero.
“But the brothers harbor a terrible secret,” Inglima observed. “Will Win choose family loyalty or listen to his conscience?
“‘Everyday Heroes’ explores issues and questions about the meaning of heroism, the power of the media and the silencing of boys’ emotions in our society,” the director noted.
Three performances of “Everyday Heroes” are scheduled at 7:30 p.m. May 15 to 17, with ticket prices ranging from $5 to $10.

Following the Youth Theater productions, the playhouse will raise the curtain on Bernard Farrell’s “The Verdi Girls” May 29 as the final production of the theater’s 86th season.
