Southern California RegionalsVICTORVILLE — K.D. Doran and Evelyn Wallace, Orange Coast College’s unseeded doubles team, upset Santa Barbara’s No. 4-seeded tandem, 6-2, 6-3, to highlight the Pirates’ performance at Victorville College Friday.

After the victory, Doran and Wallace advanced to today’s semifinals with a 6-1, 6-0 win over a San Diego Mesa doubles team. Jaleh Mazaheri and Heather Morton, the OCC No. 3-seeded team, are also in the semifinals after wins in the Round of 16 and quarterfinals on Friday.

In singles, Mazaheri defeated Santa Barbara’s Anna Ottman, 6-1, 7-5, in the Round of 16, and bested Palomar’s Mara Nissinoss, 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 6-1, in the quarterfinals, to advance to today’s semifinals.

Wallace lost in the Round of 16 to Saddleback’s Erina Hung, 6-1, 6-2.

The semifinals for singles start today at 9 a.m., again at Victorville College. The doubles are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

Southern California RegionalsSAN DIEGO — Orange Coast College singles player Jon Kroopf and the doubles team of Patrick Lam and Charlie Nguyen advanced to the state championships with victories in the Round of 16 Friday at Barnes Tennis Center.

Kroopf defeated Flavio Rueda of Riverside, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, in the Round of 16. Kroopf also beat College of the Desert’s Bruno Sousa, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, on Thursday. Earlier in the season, Kroopf had lost to both. Kroopf lost to Stefan Federson of CoD, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

Lam and Nguyen defeated Colin Simpson and Shaun Benham of Grossmont, 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), in the Round of 16. The OCC duo lost in the quarterfinals when Lam retired due to a wrist injury.

Kroopf, Lam and Nguyen will compete in the state championships May 11 at Cabrillo College.
