ON CAMPUS AT OCC:College’s 59th graduating class walks at end of May

Orange Coast College will host its 59th commencement May 25 at the Pacific Amphitheater in Costa Mesa.

The ceremony begins at 5:30 p.m., and a crowd in excess of 7,000 is anticipated.

The college will honor more than 2,000 students at the ceremony.

Terry Timmins, the college’s faculty member of the year for 2006-07, will be the commencement speaker. Timmins of Laguna Beach is an Orange Coast College professor of sociology and anthropology. He’s taught at OCC for 36 years.

The student speaker will be Michaela Bryant of Anaheim, a member of OCC’s women’s crew and the Phi Alpha Mu social science honor society. Bryant will transfer next fall to the University of San Diego, and will row for the Toreros.

Orange Coast College will present its annual outstanding citizen award to Dr. Paul Selecky, medical director of the pulmonary department and sleep disorders center at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach. Selecky serves as medical director of OCC’s respiratory care and polysomnography programs.

Honorary associates degrees will be awarded to Henry Blaes, Francis Eastman and Don Nankivil, community volunteers in OCC’s Tutorial Center.

A gala reception for all graduates and certificate recipients, and their friends and family members, will be held at the amphitheater following the ceremony.

SUMMER REGISTRATION BEGINS MAY 14

Telephone registration begins May 14 for OCC’s two 2007 summer sessions.

The sessions begin the weeks of June 4 and 25, and consist of four-, six- and eight-week classes. Summer classes are open to OCC students, members of the community, high school juniors and seniors, and students at four-year colleges and universities.

OCC SEARCHES FOR ALUMNI

OCC’s Alumni Assn. is making plans for Homecoming 2007 in November during the Coast versus Golden West football game.

“We’re hoping that alumni call us or register on the OCC website so that we can communicate with them,” Julie Clevenger of the college’s foundation office said. “Though we’re hoping to collect as many names as possible, we’re especially looking for former band members, cheerleaders and football players to participate in Homecoming 2007.”

49TH HONORS NIGHT

The curtain will go up for the 49th time Wednesday evening on OCC’s stunning Honors Night awards ceremony.

Nearly $300,000 in student scholarships will be awarded to 300 students, and more than 150 student leaders will be honored. Honors Night begins at 6 p.m. in the Robert B. Moore Theatre. More than 900 students, parents and guests are expected.

Approximately 250 corporations, service clubs, individuals and campus organizations have contributed awards for this year’s event.
