Newport council votes to oppose golf course idea

The Newport Beach City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to oppose any plan to remove the back nine holes of the Newport Beach Golf Course. The property is owned by Orange County, and officials have been looking at other uses in anticipation of the end of the golf course’s lease on July 31.

No formal plans to reuse the property have been drawn up, but John Wayne Airport officials have suggested turning the land into airport parking. Golfers and the golf course’s owners are vehemently opposed to losing the parcel and have flooded Orange County Supervisor John Moorlach’s office with letters.
