Boys APP Under-14

Eddie Saavedra, who chipped in with three assists each, had a spectacular game, making great offensive and defensive plays throughout. Christian Rodriguez and Edgar Rodriguez had one assist each.

Great passes were made by Cory Frino and Richie Bello, allowing Costa Mesa to keep the ball in their possession. Defenders Jovany Castillo, Richie Bello and Jason Anaya did an excellent job protecting the goal. Teddy Prescott made some great defensive blocks against Newport.

Boys under-12 SelectCosta Mesa vs. Irvine: Despite a 2-0 deficit, Kyle Barnett, Alfredo Martinez, Josh Vanderwal and Eric Cerros provided strong defense to hold Irvine scoreless in the second half. Josh Vanderwal scored the first goal for Mesa with a shot fired from outside the 18. Later Devin Brady scored on a penalty kick after being fouled in the box to tie it up, 2-2.

Girls Under-12 Select

Newport 3, North Irvine 0: Christina Arechigo, Brenda Torres, Nikki Walsh and Newport’s defense were spectacular in Newport’s victory. Arechigo notched Newport’s first goal in the second quarter on a drive along the right wing from combined crossing passes by Kendall Lindsay and Walsh. In the third quarter, Torres scored from the left post after Arechigo’s shot attempt from the right wing. In the fourth quarter, Arechigo, playing midfield, initiated a fast break by passingto Walsh, who drove up the middle and assisted Torres. Lindsey, Taylor Harrison, and Kathryn De La Torre neutralized North Irvine’s midfielders, while Newport’s defense of Caroline Johnson, Elyssa Barnett, Ashley Harris, Bailey Reike and goalies Gigi Light and Kathryn De La Torre allowed only one shot and shut out the opposition for the fourth straight game.

Girls Under-12 Recreational

Newport Wahinis vs. Corona del Mar: Julia Frei, Page Keys, and McKenna Johnson contributed on offense for the Wahinis. Defensively, Nicole Franco and Katheryn Snell excelled at keeping the ball out of the net. Brenda Luna played despite a hip injury. Her kick from near midfield for the Wahinis’ second goal proved to the be the difference in the game. Keys had five saves in the second half as goalie.

Girls Under-8

Tidal Waves vs. The Flaming Peaches: Both teams displayed both strong offense and defense. Destry Comp put the ball in the net for the Waves and Julia Ackerman added a second goal in the third quarter. Brianna Smith and Hannah Alderson played up front for the Tidal Waves with strong midfield support from Vanessa Crandall and Emma Hammond. Isabella Morris passed well. Siena Amoroso and Lauren Henke repeatedly stopped the Peaches’ offense with aggressive tackling and accurate positioning on defense.

Eighth-grade boys

Trabuco Mustangs 37, Newport-Mesa Elite 36: Newport-Mesa started the spring season with a close loss to the Mustangs in Santa Ana. The Elite’s Ryan Andrews led all scorers with 14 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and six steals, while Adam Spies chipped in with 10 points, three steals and a block. Alex Turney and Taylor Wildman played stingy defense, combining for three points, four rebounds, five steals and six assists, while Justin Ruffalo, Max Carpenter and Ashton Meginnis all played well in the loss.

Newport-Mesa Elite 37 Capo-Dana Makos 35: The Elite picked up their first win of the season with an overtime victory over the Makos. Adam Spies led all scorers with 10 points, two steals and two rebounds, while Chris Whitelegge added seven points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists. Ryan Andrews and Ashton Meginnis controlled the paint and combined for 12 points, 15 rebounds and four steals. Justin Ruffalo added six rebounds. Max Carpenter, Alex Turney, Taylor Wildman and Spencer Rautus all played well in the win.

Costa Mesa 8, Newport 3: Bryan Zamudio had a hat trick and Tony Rodriguez scored two goals for Costa Mesa. Edgar Rodriguez, Jordan Young and Christian Rodriguez contributed one goal each to help lead Costa Mesa to the win in advance play program action.
