Jolly athlete in 1,600 run

NEWPORT BEACH — Alex Jolly, a Newport Beach resident, was one of two young athletes to break a meet record at the Newport Beach Youth Track and Field Championships at Newport Harbor High on April 27.

Jolly, born in 1992, broke the division record in the 1,600 meters, finishing in 5 minutes, 10.04 seconds.

“My coach Sue Davis told me that the key to the record was to stay on pace,” Jolly wrote in an e-mail. “This was a tough field.”

Jolly has been running since the third grade.

“I always get a kick out of people saying ‘hey, aren’t you that kid that I see running all over Newport,’” he said.

Gabrielle Scott of Irvine broke the record in the girls’ 1993 division for the 400 meters in 1:04.25. Kelsey Long, a Balboa Island resident, tied the long jump record with her mark of 13 feet, 3 inches, in the girls’ 1995 division.

In the boys’ 1993 division, Ramon Vargas was a three-event winner, taking first in the 100, 200 high jump.

Several athletes ages 6-12 from Newport Beach, Costa Mesa and neighboring cities competed in the events.
