Sage Hill School’s baseball team has clinched its third CIF playoff appearance. The Lightning reached the playoffs in 2003 and 2004. A story in Wednesday’s edition and Saturday’s edition said this season was Sage Hill’s first playoff appearance.

LONG BEACH — The Sage Hill School boys had two individuals and two relay teams qualify for Thursday’s championship finals after their performances at Belmont Plaza Tuesday.

Nick Wan qualified sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.22 seconds. Andrew Dorne qualified eighth in the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes, 2.69 seconds. Dan Chen, Perry Peng, Jimmy Miller and Beau Caillouette are seeded sixth in the 200 free relay (1:34.15). Wan and Dorne, along with Ryan Barth and Caillouette qualified eighth in the 400 free relay. The championship finals consists of the division’s top eight.

Sage Hill 8, Whitney 7

NEWPORT COAST — Lauren Neale hit a walk-off double, driving in the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Lightning clinched third place in the Academy League and a playoff berth Tuesday.

Neale (5-4) struck out eight batters for Sage Hill (6-9, 5-4 in league), which according to the coaching staff advances to the CIF Southern Section playoffs for the second time in school history.

The Lightning close out the regular season Thursday at home against Brethren Christian at 4 p.m.

NEWPORT COAST — The Lightning nearly upset the Academy League’s top team, but came up short in extra innings Tuesday at Sage Hill School.

Chris Griffin was three for four, while J.J. Schumacher was one for four with two RBIs for the Lightning (9-11, 7-7 in league).

Schumacher connected for a two-run single with two outs in the sixth inning. Sage Hill pitcher Travis Duncan pitched seven solid innings, scattering four hits and allowing two runs.

The Lightning left the bases loaded three times, as Oxford Academy improved to 17-4-1, 12-1-1 in league. Sage Hill, which has clinched third place in league and its first playoff spot, will end its regular season at Oxford Academy Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Freshman shortstop Jacob McCann went two for three for the Sailors in a Sunset League game Tuesday.

Freshman Dillan Freiberg pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Newport Harbor (6-18, 1-13 in league), which will end the regular season at home on Senior Day against Marina Thursday at 3 p.m.
