CIF Division I preliminariesLONG BEACH — Corona del Mar High senior Stephanie Gabert finished second in the 200-yard freestyle and fifth in the 500 free, leading local swimmers who qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division I championship finals Wednesday at Belmont Plaza.

Gabert swam a personal-best time of 1 minute, 54 seconds in the 200 free and a time of 5:00.24 in the 500 free. The top eight finishers in each race qualify for Friday’s finals.

CdM sophomore Sarah Furgatch finished fifth in the 100 breast (a personal-best 1:06.93) to qualify for the finals, and the CdM team 400 free relay team of Chelsea Pike, Furgatch, Kelsey Larson and Gabert finished in seventh in 3:39.28.

For the CdM boys, senior Brian Peotter qualified for the championship finals in both the 50 freestyle (21.76 seconds, sixth) and the 100 free (46.53 seconds, fifth). Teammate Yutaro Yamashita, a junior, qualified fourth in the 100 butterfly (51.13).

Yamashita, Mike Berry, R.J. Baldoni and Peotter qualified sixth in the boys’ 400 freestyle relay, in 3:13.43.

For Newport Harbor High, the boys’ 200 free relay team of David Linden, Kyle McGhie, Blake Hockenbury and Clint Jorth qualified fourth in 1:28.84. The CIF Division I finals are Friday at 6 p.m., at Belmont Plaza.

Costa Mesa 7, Estancia 6Nine inningsCOSTA MESA — The Mustangs dealt Estancia its first Orange Coast League loss at Estancia Wednesday.

The Eagles dropped to 17-7, 8-1 in league. Kira Mitani delivered the game-winning RBI single, Costa Mesa Coach Sharon Uhl said.
