Trey Harris, a combo guard from McCook Community College in Nebraska, has signed a national letter of intent with the UC Irvine men’s basketball program, announced by Anteaters Coach Pat Douglass.

The 6-foot Harris averaged 12 points, four assists and shot 43% from three-point range en route to All-Region IX honors this past season for Coach Ty Orton. Harris had high-scoring games of 28 points versus Southeast Nebraska, 26 against Western Wyoming and 21 in a victory over Northeast Nebraska. He was named to the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Nebraska Junior College team.

Harris, who has two years of eligibility remaining, prepped at Mitchell High in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he was named to the all-area and all-conference first teams, and was an honorable mention all-state player.

“Trey is a versatile player at the point or two-guard positions,” Douglass said. “He can score as well as being a leading assists’ man. His flexibility will certainly be an asset for the Anteaters.”

UCI TRIO STAND OUT

Seniors Matt Morris and Blair Erickson and junior Wes Etheridge of the UC Irvine baseball team have been named to the 2007 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Award Watch List.

The annual award is a dedication to the memory of the former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace, who died from cancer in 1985 at age 27.

Morris, an outfielder, entered this week second on the team with a .359 average and tops the team with 41 RBIs. The outfielder is second with 15 stolen bases and six home runs and sits third with 57 hits. He is seventh in the Big West in batting average (.359), seventh in slugging (.538) and tied for third in RBI (41).

Erickson is the NCAA all-time leader in saves with 51. The right-hander has blanked the opponent in 12.1 of 15.2 innings pitched this season and is perfect in 11 save opportunities. He has 21 strikeouts and has allowed just five earned runs on 12 hits for a 2.87 ERA.

Etheridge opened the season with an 8-0 record, earning his first four wins as a reliever. The right-hander is ranked 10th in the country with nine victories.

The current list of 112 will be pared down to 30 semi-finalists at the end of May and three finalists will be announced during the College World Series. The awards ceremony will be televised nationally on the Fox Sports Network, July 3.
