Newport’s season ends in first round
MANHATTAN BEACH — The Newport Harbor High boys’ tennis team’s season came to an end Thursday, when the Sailors lost to Mira Costa, 11-7.
But first-year Sailors’ Coach Brooke Taylor was pleased with the season that finished in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs at Manhattan Country Club.
Jake Fleming, Newport Harbor’s No. 1 singles player who has been battling shoulder pain this season, won three sets. John Hutchinson had two victories in singles and Josh Tuz had one. The Newport doubles team of Connor Curry and Daron Arnold also scored a win.
“We had a good season overall,” Taylor said in a phone interview. “Obviously our main goal is to make CIF and we did.”
