Ted Newland, the UC Irvine men’s water polo coach who led the Anteaters to three national titles in his 40 years, is one of four individuals selected to receive the university’s highest honor, the Medal.

The honor is given annually for formal and lifelong recognition to those who have made extraordinary contributions to the university’s mission of teaching, research and public service. He will receive the award on Oct. 6 at Bren Events Center.

Newland compiled a 714-345-5 record in men’s water polo at UC Irvine, producing 72 All-Americans. He came to UCI in 1966 as the men’s water polo and swimming coach. He coached six of UC Irvine’s national championships.

Newland, as coach emeritus, continues to assist the UCI men’s water polo program. He was inducted into the UCI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999, the Occidental Hall of Fame in 1996 and the U.S. Water Polo Hall of Fame in 1995.

When UCI planned to eliminate water polo in the early ‘90s due to budget cuts, Newland led the fundraising effort to save the program and decided to coach for more than 10 years at an annual salary of $1.
