COSTA MESA — With his team leading comfortably, Christopher Moya headed the ball twice and then attempted to strike the ball into the opponent’s goal. He missed.

Moya already had two goals and his team was about to go up three goals after the score by Wilson teammate Ronaldo Villeda.

Moya then tapped into his boundless energy and completed his hat trick Wednesday at the Costa Mesa Farm Complex. Moya’s three goals led the Wilson A team to a 5-1 win over Adams A in a boys’ third- and fourth-grade Gold Division pool-play game of the Daily Pilot Cup.

“Only when I play like five games I get tired,” Moya said.

Wilson is making their debut in the eighth annual Daily Pilot Cup this year but the kids played unified nonetheless. Many players shouted excitedly in Spanish to each other and played an aggressive game.

“A lot of [the Wilson players] probably played soccer together [before],” Adams Coach Alexa Aguilar said. “The players here [on Adams], a lot of them haven’t played before.”

Wilson attacked early in the first half. Villeda quickly scored on a strike to the right side of the goal. Just moments later, Moya added his first goal which prompted Aguilar to encourage her players.

“I think they played really good, I was really pleased,” said Wilson Coach Nick Taylor.

Moya was a sparkplug who ran all over the field in the first half. The ball stayed on Adams’ defensive side for most of the half but Adams had some offensive opportunities as well.

Adams had a free kick at Wilson’s goalie but it missed wide right and went out of bounds.

After a beautiful defensive play by the Adams goalie, Moya scored on a kick to the right side of the goal. When the whistle sounded at halftime, it was 3-0 Wilson.

“He’s awesome,” Taylor said of Moya. “We actually put him on the C team because we didn’t know what his last name was, so he wasn’t with us for the last game and this game he just came out and dominated.”

Wilson continued to stay aggressive in the second half, but gave up a goal when Jared Salinas of Adams scored.

Despite giving up two second half goals to Wilson, Adams played better on the defensive side of the field and had respectable shots on goal.

“At the end of the game the defense was pretty strong and they were able to work together more,” Aguilar said. “We haven’t had very many practices so that was an issue.”

Villeda scored his second goal of the afternoon, providing an important offensive lift for Wilson.

“You can tell he is one of the kids that dominate in practice,” Taylor said. “He just went out there and played really good.

He missed the first game because he had a club game but he came today and took it to them.”
