Soccer summer camps dates nearing
Laguna Beach High School Summer Camps is offering three sessions for local youth soccer this year.
The first session is a girls’ camp (Camp I) and will run June 25-29. Daily sessions are 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Laguna Beach High. A second session, a boys’ camp (Camp II), will be held July 9-13 from 9 a.m. to noon, also at the school. The final session is open to both boys and girls (Camp III), includes special tournament-style training and will be held from 9 a.m. to noon July 23-27.
The camps are open to youth ages 6 to 16.
Professional level training will be offered with an emphasis placed on individual ball skills, speed work, small game tactics, goalkeeping and match level decision making. All players will be grouped appropriately.
Laguna Beach High boys’ and girls’ varsity coaches Patrick Coyne and Bill Rolfing will lead all camps with instruction in a positive learning environment.

Wacholder, Turner third at Louisville
Rachel Wacholder and Tyra Turner battled back from an upset loss to reach the semifinals and earn a third-place finish Sunday at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Louisville Open in Kentucky.
Wacholder (Laguna Beach High, Class of 1993) and Turner, the third-seed, won their opening match Saturday by defeating No. 14-seed Jenny Pavley/Alicia Potzin, 21-18, 24-22. In their next match, they were upset by No. 6-seed Carrie Dodd /Tatiana Minello, 21-15, 21-11. Wacholder and Turner fought back in contender’s bracket play to win three matches to reach the semifinals. They defeated No. 9 Angela Lewis/Priscilla Lima, 21-12, 21-12, upended No. 2-seed Nicole Branagh and Wacholder’s former partner, Elaine Youngs, 21-18, 21-16, and then beat No. 5-seed Jennifer Boss/April Ross, 21-17, 21-19.
In the semifinal round, Wacholder and Turner were eliminated by No. 7-seed Holly McPeak/Logan Tom, 21-19, 19-21, 17-15. McPeak and Tom went on to fall to No. 1-ranked Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh, 21-14, 21-12, in the first-ever women’s title match in Louisville.
On the men’s side, No. 1-seed Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated No. 2-seed Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal, 21-18, 21-16, to win their fifth title in six tour events this year. Dain Blaton (Laguna Beach High, Class of 1990) and partner Jason Lee finished in 17th place.
