MEN’S CREW

National championshipCAMDEN, N.J. — The Orange Coast College men’s freshman crew teams qualified for the semifinals of the Intercollegiate Rowing Assn. National Championship Regatta Thursday afternoon.

The Freshman Eight and Freshman Four teams advanced to today’s semifinals, held on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.

The Freshman Eight team finished second in their heat behind UC-Berkeley with a time of five minutes, 53.58 seconds. Berkeley was first with 5:49.633.

The Orange Coast Freshman Four was sixth in its heat with 6:48.871, but came back in the repechage to advance to the finals with a second-place finish and a time of 6:42.644.

This regatta marks the first time the Pirates’ have competed at the IRA championship in a decade.

SAILING

National championshipANNAPOLIS, Md. — The UC Irvine sailing team is in third place after the second day of competition Thursday at the 2007 Intercollegiate Sailing Association/Gill Coed National Championship hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The competition is scheduled to conclude today.

The College of Charleston leads the 18-school field with 168 points through a total of 28 races. Dartmouth is second with 172 points and UCI is third with 184.

The Anteaters’ Frank Tybor and Emma Nilsson are third overall in the A Division with 92 points through 14 races.

UCI’s Will Pochereva and Whitney Loufek are third in Division B, also with 92 points after 14 races.
