A hit-and-run in Costa Mesa claimed the life of one man, police said. This is the second fatal collision this weekend.

The accident occurred at 9:30 p.m. Saturday as Simon Alviar-Leyva, 41, of Costa Mesa attempted to cross Adams Avenue just west of the crosswalk at Harbor Boulevard.

Alviar-Leyva was not yet halfway across the street heading north toward the Savon shopping center when a 1999 beige Nissan Altima clipped him, police said.

The driver, Michael Kelly, 27, also of Costa Mesa, kept driving west on Adams, heading into the Mesa Verde neighborhoods.

A witness followed Kelly briefly in another vehicle and called police once the suspect turned off of Adams, Sgt. Bryan Glass said.

Police searched the area and quickly found Kelly walking southbound along Harbor Boulevard near a Super 8 Motel, Scott said.

The city’s DUI team conducted a number of sobriety tests and found Kelly had been driving while intoxicated, Scott said. He was arrested for felony DUI, felony hit-and-run and felony manslaughter.

Kelly was booked at Costa Mesa City Jail, where he is being held on $100,000 bail, Scott said.
