A $1.6-million gift from the Irvine Co. is funding three projects in Upper Newport Bay, all of which are in different stages of completion, Irvine Co. Senior Vice President Dan Miller said.

Part of the donation was already used to improve signage along the Back Bay Loop Trail. The signs clarify where the trail begins and ends and where access for people with disabilities is available, Miller said.

The second project funded by the donation is the Back Bay Science Center, which is under construction on Shellmaker Island.

The donation will also fund a restoration project at Big Canyon, including the construction of restrooms, drinking fountains and recreation trails. This project will begin in 2008, Miller said.
