One more Day to jump

SACRAMENTO — It was a good day for one of the Day high-jumping sisters in Sacramento.

Sharon Day, a former Costa Mesa High standout now at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, made her first trip to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after a one-year hiatus because of a left broken foot.

The junior, who won the event as a sophomore, competed against her sister, Jasmin, a freshman at the University of Arizona. It marked the first time the two advanced to the event together, but it was only Sharon moving on.

Sharon was one of 14 high jumpers advancing out of Wednesday’s qualifying round to Friday’s final at Sacramento State at 5:15 p.m. Sharon cleared 5 feet, 10 3/4 inches, making her one of 10 athletes clearing the mark. Jasmin’s highest mark was 5-7.

In the men’s high jump qualifying round, UC Irvine junior Julian Eison advanced to the finals for the first time. He cleared 6-10 3/4 , putting him alongside 15 others making it to Friday’s final at 3 p.m.

Two other Anteaters will compete in Sacramento today, with senior Ricky Barnes in the 1,500 meter semifinal event and sophomore Lauren Collins in the heptathlon. Barnes’ event starts at 6:05 p.m. and Collins’ at 10:30 a.m.
