GREER’S BEST BUYS:Surf and skate store Board Gallery opens

Big chain surf shops look out. There’s a new grom on the block who is someone to reckon with. The Board Gallery, owned by Tony Peters and Ray Flores, an original Z-Boy from Dogtown fame, has come to O.C. via Venice. The 11-year-old shop is the newest find in Newport for pro surf and skate gear.

The Board Gallery carries top-of-the-line surf and skate gear — Black Label, SMA, Powell, Chocolate, ABEC 11 — as well as hard-to-find vintage items. Collectors from as far away as Japan seek out Board Gallery for its rare items, including a Zephyr surfboard, an early ‘70s Lightning Bolt surfboard, and a board hand-painted by the late Wayne Miyata, a surfer who appeared in “The Endless Summer.”

And be sure to check out the serpentine skateboard wheel collection that has been displayed in museums in New York, London and Japan. Hundreds of colorful wheels represent the origins of skateboard materials. Mark your calendar: June 21 is National Skateboarding Day, and The Board Gallery celebrates at 4 p.m. with free pizza, tons of giveaways, guest pro skaters and a special commemorative deck signed by pros. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. 3333 Newport Blvd. in Newport Beach. (949) 675-5183.
