A Costa Mesa man was arrested after a hit-and-run, but not before changing clothes.

Anthony Monkiewicz, 47, was driving a green Dodge Caravan on Bristol Street when he reportedly ran a red signal at Newport Boulevard and collided with a silver Toyota Camry, injuring 72-year-old Augustine Schofield, authorities said. The accident occurred at around 6:30 p.m.

Monkiewicz left the scene of the accident on foot and broke into a residence on the 800 block of Magellan. The suspect departed the residence in different clothing in an alleged effort to elude capture, police said. Unfortunately for Monkiewicz, officers recognized him and he was arrested.

Monkiewicz was booked into the Costa Mesa City Jail where he was charged with felony leaving the scene of an accident; a parole hold was placed on him, police said.
