Four girls from the Corona del Mar High track and field team won the national title in the 4x1,600 meter relay on Friday.

Hilary May, Sarah Cummings, Allison Damon and Shelby Buckley completed the 4x1,600 meters in 20 minutes and 23 seconds at the Nike Outdoor National Meet in Greensboro, N.C.

They were hoping to break the record of 19:56, but there was no one on the track to push them. Buckley finished the race nearly 150 meters ahead of the next girl, said CdM track coach Bill Sumner.

“We took a shot at the record, but it was very difficult without anyone around us,” Sumner said. “It was just us against the clock.”

The team of May, Claire Smith, Damon and Buckley finished fourth in the distance medley with a time of 11:48.

Sarah Cummings took 10th place in the 3,200 with 10:34.

The 4x1,600 title marks the third straight year that CdM has won a national title.

“The medley was a more challenging race,” Sumner said. “We’re very happy with the national title. We did the raise the bar a little high. Two national titles in one day is a little much.”
