Eastbluff gives principal the Hollywood treatment

Charlene Metoyer isn’t just a principal; she’s a performance artist.

During her tenure at Eastbluff Elementary School, she has allowed students to turn her into a human ice cream sundae (as a reward for reading enough books), sung through a megaphone on the roof of the school (ditto) and come to work in pajamas and a tall, red-and-white-striped hat (for Dr. Seuss’ birthday, of course).

So on Monday, the PTA honored Metoyer, who will transfer to Harbor View Elementary School in July, in a suitable fashion: they heaped her with Oscars. Or, rather, stuffed Otters, in honor of the school’s mascot.

At 8:30 a.m. on the Eastbluff quad, PTA members took turns at the microphone opening envelopes and bestowing awards on their principal, who sat on a mock throne wearing a crown.

Among her prizes were Best Costume (for the Seuss hat, among other things) and Bravest Hero in Academy Awards History.

Metoyer also picked up an Otter for Best Plot Twist — since the talkative principal, at Harbor View, will work a few blocks away from a restaurant called the Quiet Woman. For a few minutes on Monday, though, that wasn’t much of a twist.

“I’m just overwhelmed,” Metoyer said, Otters piled on her lap. “I’m speechless.”
