YOUTH SWIM RESULTS

The Newport Hills Swim Team is surging.

Just ask the defending South Coast Swim Conference champion Green Valley Dolphins.

The Killer Whales took sole possession of first place in conference by upending the Dolphins, 767.5 to 569.5, on Saturday at the Newport Hills pool.

Newport Hills (3-0) and Green Valley combined to break 13 pool records.

The Killer Whales were led by their 7-8 year-old boys, who took first in both the medley and freestyle relays. They also swept first, second and third place in all five individual races.

For Newport Hills, there were also a number of three-time winners in individual events. They included Chloe Harbilas, in the Under-6 girls’ 25-yard freestyle, 25 butterfly and 25 backstroke; Madeleine Musselman, in the 7-8 girls’ 25 free, 25 back and 50 free; Taylor Cortens, in the 9-10 boys’ 25 fly, 50 back and 100 individual medley; and Blake Motal, in the 11-12 boys’ 50 free, 50 back and 100 IM.

Two-time winners for the Killer Whales were Henry Wilde (7-8 boys 25 free and 25 fly), JT Russell (7-8 boys 25 back and 50 free), and Brynn Motal (9-10 girls 25 fly and 100 IM).

Five new medley relay pool records were set in the first 11 events of the day, including one by the NHST 9-10 boys’ group of Taylor Cortens, Brett Greenlee, Danny Robertson and Nick Schroeder. They set a new pool record in the 100-yard medley relay, touching in 1 minute, 5.01 seconds.

Three Killer Whales also established new individual pool records, including Cortens’ time of 1:13.47 in the 100 IM, which broke an Aaron Piersol pool record for the second straight week. Blake Motal swam to a new pool record in the 11-12 boys’ 100 IM (1:07.72) and Mater Dei senior and soon-to-be Notre Dame freshman, Mary Flynn, set a new pool record in the 15-18 girls’ 100 IM (1:04.66).

Newport Hills’ Jake Bays (fly), Jack Elliott (back), Morgan Cortens (breast), Matt McKinnon (free), Alexandra Musselman (breast), Hollace Barden (fly), and Trevor Gladych (breast) all set personal best times when winning their individual events.

The first-place Killer Whales travel to Fountain Valley to take on the Greenbrook Gators on Saturday.
