A 10-year-old boy was saved from drowning while swimming at the Newport Dunes Resort Wednesday afternoon by an off-duty nurse who performed rescue breathing techniques on the child, the Newport Beach Fire Department said.

At 1:26 p.m. Newport Beach firefighters responded to a call of a near drowning at the Newport Beach resort. It was not clear why the boy experienced trouble in the water. City lifeguards were not on duty as the resort is privately operated.

Paramedics took him to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian where he was treated, fire department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz said.

As today marks the first day of summer, the department wants to press a number of water safety tips:

* Never swim alone.

* Do not fight the current

* Know your swimming ability.

* Swimmers should not use inflatable equipment in water depths where they cannot swim.
