COMMUNITY & CLUBS:American Legion parade salutes patriots of liberty

The American Legion Yacht Club of Newport Harbor Post 291 will host the annual Newport Harbor Fourth of July Old Glory Boat Parade on July 4, beginning at 1 p.m. at Collins Island. The theme of the parade is “Patriots of Liberty,” and vessels will be judged on how well they are decorated to reflect this theme.

All yacht club members and individual skippers are invited to participate. Those interested can download information and applications by accessing www. alyc291.com, or by picking up entries at Post 291. The last day to sign up is July 3. The post is at 215 15th St., on Balboa Peninsula.

The Old Glory Boat Parade Awards Dinner will be held July 15, at Post 291. A no-host bar will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 each, with proceeds going to event expenses and legion charities. For reservations or tickets, call (949) 673-5070.

HARBOR MESA LIONS INSTALL NEW OFFICERS

The Harbor Mesa Lions Club recently held their installation of new officers for the 2007-2008 year. District Governor Elect Jon Casteel officiated in the ceremonies, which were held at the home of John and Gina Stansbury. Installed as club president was Gina Stansbury. Serving with Stansbury are Marianne Allen, first vice president; Lynn Seaholm, second vice president; secretary, Sue Seager; Cathy Waters, treasurer; Carol Van Holt, bulletin editor; Eileen Jensen tail twister/Lion tamer; and Arlene Schafer, immediate past president. The directors are Janie Harris, Terry Burchinsky, Myrta Sparkes, Sally Uhlir, Sandy Kasler, Eunice Thomason, Joan Parks, Bernice Ellis and Barbara Hayward.

SCARCITY VERSUS ABUNDANCE

One of the speakers at last week’s Rotary International Convention in Salt Lake City was Salt Lake City Rotarian Hyrum W. Smith, founder of Franklin Quest.

“There comes a time when you feel you have sufficient resources for your needs, then your are wealthy,” he noted. “It is at that time, when you have more than sufficient resources, that you should do something with the extra resources that matters, that makes a difference in other people’s lives.”
