Huntington Valley roars back, beats Ocean View

Not even a six-run deficit could stop Huntington Valley from winning the district title, as the Yankees used five home runs to roar back for a 15-8 victory over a talented Ocean View Yankees squad.

It was in the top of the third when Huntington Valley began to rally, the first step being a two-run third inning that saw Jordan Pascual record an RBI single that narrowed the score to 7-3.

A six-run outburst in the fourth inning gave Huntington Valley the lead for good. In the inning, Tyler Macleod and Alex Alagata each had an RBI-double; Jake Weiser and Gordon McDonald each an RBI-single and Gustavo Flores smacked a two-run home run to give their team an 8-7 lead.

Huntington Valley had hit 38 home runs prior to the start of the Tournament of Champions.

“I’ll tell you, Ocean View is a great team. They played well and jumped on us early,” Huntington Valley Manager Arte Libunao said. “It took great courage, team work and motivation for us to come back the way we did against a very strong team. We went through the whole emotional roller coaster in the game. We were down, we were happy and we ended up in a party mood.”

Macleod hit for the cycle in the game. He hit a single in the third, a double in the fourth, a triple in the fifth and a home run in the sixth.

The Huntington Valley Yankees, who finished the year 17-3, are Tyler Macleod, Tate Libunao, Jake Weiser, Alex Alagata, Jordan Pascual, Caleb Bush, Todd Martinez, Mason Talbert, Kyle Williams, Gustavo Flores, Gordon McDonald, Mackin Carroll, Manager Arte Libunao and coaches Dave Weiser and Dave Macleod.

All-Huntington Valley finale goes to White Sox

Two teams familiar with each other — the White Sox and Dodgers of Huntington Valley — squared off in the final and it was the White Sox who held on for a 2-1 victory in a well-played game.

It was the second meeting in a week between the teams. The Dodgers, who finished in fourth place during the regular season, beat the first-place White Sox, 4-3, in the league’s postseason tournament to earn a district playoff berth.

All of the game’s scoring occurred in the first inning. In the top half of the frame, the White Sox’s Jordan Kirkenslager singled and later scored on a triple down the right field line by Dylan McCarthy. Tyler Murray drove in the next run when his infield sacrifice ground out plated McCarthy.

That 2-0 lead was shaved in half in the bottom of the first when Garrett Kelly hit a two-out home run to right-center field.

McCarthy went the distance for the White Sox, scattering three hits — and just two after the first inning.

“Dylan pitched two games in the Tournament of Champions and in both games he pitched the best he has all season,” White Sox Manager Ken Murray said of McCarthy.

The White Sox, who finished the year 18-6, are McKay Contrucci, Will Donald, Michael Eliot, Connor Hayes, Dawson Hoppes, Charlie Himmelberger, Jordan Kirkenslager, Pierson Loska, Dylan McCarthy, Tyler Murray, Noah Nelson, Zack Pannell, Tyler Warren, Manager Ken Murray and coaches Steve Loska and Dennis McCarthy.

Robinwood shows little mercy

The Robinwood Yankees cruised through the tournament and concluded their run with an 11-1 victory over the Fountain Valley Phillies in a game halted in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.

Blake Thomas’ two-run single in the fourth gave the Yankees their 10-run spread.

“The kids did an awesome job all season,” said Yankees Manager Jeff Henscheid.

The third inning featured a highlight reel for Robinwood. First, Thomas hit a two-run home run and two batters later, Tyler Abend powered a two-run homer.

The Robinwood Yankees are Tyler Abend, Matthew Bodge, Matthew Clark, Nicolas Draheim, Ryan Gadbois, Kyle Henscheid, Shane Holdaway, Bison Huang, Ari Miranda, Blake Thomas, Angel Villanueva, Kory Wills, Manager Jeff Henscheid and coaches Mark Abend and Jeff Thomas.
