HARBOR SEEKS COACH

Newport Harbor High has an opening for a varsity softball coach for the upcoming school year. The position does not come with a teaching job.

FORMER SAILOR COMPETES

Recent Newport Harbor High graduate Bryce Greeley shot 17-over-par 233 over 54 holes to finish 49th in the 60-player boys’ field of the Mission Hills Desert Junior, completed Thursday at the Mission Hills Country Club’ Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Sihwan Kim of Buena Park shot 10-under 206 to earn his third straight title at the golf event.

ATHLETICS DO IT

The American League Newport Beach Little League Double-A Division Athletics defeated the Cardinals in the Championship game of the Newport Invitational Baseball Tournament 12-6 on June 19.

The Cardinals struck early adding five first inning runs on a key RBI by Anthony Castagna.

Derek Mathuny allowed only one run in the second with help from teammate Jacob Fisher, who recorded the last out and finished the inning.

Cardinals ace Jordan Hauser shut the A’s down with two strikeouts.

Von Der Ahe displayed nasty stuff, striking out six and shutting down the Cards in the third and fourth innings.

A’s closer Ben Palitz shut the door in the fifth inning by striking out two batters, with help by Mathuny who threw out a runner attempting to steal.

Palitz, Sammy Kobrine, Harry Miller, Fisher and Austin Cottrell all scored runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Hauser, Chris Grasso, Max Peterson, Castagna and Caleb Rodolph scored for the Cards during the game. Vanessa Grasso pitched the third and fourth innings for the Cards and recorded three strikeouts.

Jeff Fisher coached the A’s to an 18-8 record. The team batting average was .441 and it outscored opponents 242-208.
