Fine arts competition approved

The concept for a juried fine art show at City Hall was approved after a short discussion.

Orange County artists would be able to submit works to the show, up to 36 of which will be selected by a yet-to-be-named juror to be shown at the exhibit.

Under the current guidelines, the first-place winner would receive a $1,000 honorarium, which would be funded by a $20 art submission fee.

The concept will be taken to the City Council later this month for approval.

Laguna considered for global art exhibit

Charles Michael Murray of Endangered Planet Gallery informed the commission that internationally-syndicated political cartoonist Ranan Lurie may consider Laguna Beach as the West Coast site of his “United Painting,” which opened at United Nations headquarters in 2005.

The large-scale exhibit features an art motif that “flows” across a space, down stairs and into local watercourses, and has been presented around the world.

It will culminate at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Other West Coast sites under consideration include Santa Monica and San Francisco.
