Building incentive could cost Costa Mesa $500,000

A new green building incentive plan and the third year of a successful home remodeling program could cost the city of Costa Mesa more than $500,000, but they could generate new investment in the city.

The City Council will discuss the programs today at a study session. The remodeling program includes waivers of building fees and a speedier approval process for home remodeling plans, and was a huge success in 2005 and 2006.

Under the green building program, the city would build any new municipal facilities to meet standards of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Developers would be encouraged but not required to follow suit.
