Two Anteaters competing
with junior national team
Cole Reinholm, a part-time stater as a freshman for the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team that won the 2007 NCAA championship, is competing with the U.S. junior national team at the Junior World Championships in Rabat, Morocco.
Reinholm a starter at outside hitter for the American squad that also includes UCI incoming freshman Kevin Carroll, has helped Team USA post a 2-1 record in pool play.
The U.S. team was defeated by Brazil, 25-22, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, Monday to suffer its first loss in Pool B, is tied atop the six-team pool with Brazil and Russia.
Carroll, an outside hitter out of Los Alamitos High, is in his second season on the junior national team.
The 12-man team, coached by Long Beach State assistant Andy Read, played “Friendship Tournaments” with Japan and Argentina before heading to Morocco.
Also in Pool B are Argentina and Egypt.
Host Morocco, along with Iran, Cuba, Italy, Japan and Bulgaria, comprise Pool A. Cuba entered the tournament as the reigning NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Champion. Casablanca will host competition for Pool A.
The 6-foot-5 Reinholm averaged 2.38 kills and 0.97 digs per game as a freshman last season. He had a career-best 14 kills on two occasions.
Carroll, a Mizuno first-team All-American as a senior for the Griffins, was the MVP of the Orange County All-Star match. He also earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division I recognition.
