Biker didn’t want life support

Just days before the July 1 motorcycle accident that claimed his life, Wesley Estes made the decision to take his father off of life support. Afterward, Estes told his mother, Margaret Van Over, that if he was similarly dependent on life-support machines that he didn’t want to be kept alive.

On Tuesday as Van Over signed the paperwork to turn the machines off on her firstborn son who lay in a coma after the accident, she wondered whether would she regret not holding out longer.

It was then that Estes made the decision for her, succumbing to his injuries at 5:03 p.m. Tuesday.

“Your child is your hope … for the future, that he will make a better life than you and now that’s gone,” Van Over said. “I will get through it but there will be a hole there.”

“I’m going to miss him extremely bad,” she said. “He was my firstborn and we kind of grew up together.”

Funeral services for Estes have been scheduled for noon Wednesday at the Westminster Memorial Park chapel, 14801 Beach Blvd., Westminster.

Friends created a MySpace page for Estes, which includes a number of photos of him, posted memories and poems.

“I was overwhelmed because it let me glimpse who my son was as man,” Van Over said after viewing the page.

“To me his faith in God is what proves what kind of a man he was,” Van Over said. “He had a rough start but he straightened himself out [and became] a great father. He touched so many people.”

Nicole Van Over, 24, Estes’s younger sister said her big brother was a teddy bear.

“To some people he was kind of scary looking but he was extremely sweet and would do anything for you in a second,” Nicole Van Over said. “It didn’t matter if he’d been working all day or all night, he’d be there.”

For more information on the services call (714) 889-9901. A reception following the memorial will be held at Halecrest Park, 3107 Killybrooke Lane, Costa Mesa.

His family asks that anyone wishing to make donations go to the Red Cross Blood Donation Center in Santa Ana and give blood.

He is survived by his mother, sister, brother Justin Van Over and three daughters, Alyssa, 14, Haileigh, 12, and RaeAnne, 10.
