EX-’EATER IN PAN AM GAMES

Former UC Irvine volleyball player Ty Loomis will represent the U.S. in beach volleyball at the Pan American Games that began Friday and will continue through July 29 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Loomis will team with Hans Stolfus in the men’s event that begins Tuesday and runs through July 22.

Loomis and Stolfus will reunite for the first time since winning the Australian Championships in 2006. They also had a third-place finish on the Australian Pro Tour.

Loomis played UC Irvine from 1998-2000, leading the team with 450 kills in 2000 which ranks 10th in the UCI single-season annals.

On the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Tour, he was ranked second in aces with (0.82 per game) in 2006 on his way to two fifth-place finishes. Fifteen countries will participate in the men’s competition in Brazil.

GREELEY PREPARES FOR CHALLENGE

Recent Newport Harbor High graduate Bryce Greeley has entered the TEE UP Junior Challenge golf tournament, scheduled for Aug. 7-10 at Industry Hills Golf Club in the City of Industry.

Greeley is one of 84 boys and girls ages 12-18 in the draw of the prestigious tournament, put on by the American Junior Golf Assn.

As a Newport Harbor High senior, he helped the Sailors boys’ golf team finish third at the CIF Central Team Divisional, where he had a team-best score of two-under par 72 at Lakewood Golf Course.

SLAMMERS SEND TWO TO NATIONALS

The Newport-Mesa Slammers FC is sending its 18-and-under and 14-and-under girls’ teams to the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships at the Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, on July 24-29.

The Slammers U18 team opens with Arsenal World Class of New Jersey on July 25 at 7:30 a.m. and the U14 against Sting Royal 93 of Texas at 9:30 a.m.

The tournament will consist of four national finalists, teams that won their respective regional championship, in the U14 through U18 age groups for boys and girls. These 48 teams have advanced through the first two legs of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, where more than 10,000 teams began the journey at their U.S. Youth Soccer State Championships.

State champions advanced to the regional competition, which ended July 4, where more than 900 teams played in one of four regions. The national championship field consists of these regional champions.

NHBA PONY MUSTANGS TAKE FOURTH

The Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Mustang All-Stars finished fourth in the district tournament after losing, 12-2, to Fountain Valley Tuesday.

Newport Harbor advanced to the final four with wins over Tustin and Seal Beach.

Jack Binford led the team with a .422 postseason batting average.

Liam Ogburn and Rigsby Duncan and Blake Bauer each had a .600 on-base percentage.
