THE LAST WORD:Supervise kids in water

It happens every summer in Orange County.

Often, more than once.

A child drowns in the Pacific, or in a backyard pool.

Just last week, a girl was found lying on the rocks off Corona del Mar State Beach. Police found her barely conscious and unresponsive, and she was taken to a hospital. Fortunately, she survived.

We urge parents and other guardians to take extra precautions this year to prevent tragedies. A pool can be particularly dangerous for a young child, and it doesn’t take long for little ones to wander off and look for trouble.

We urge teenagers to employ the buddy system when involved in water-related activities.

If we never have to write another story about a child drowning, that’s just fine by us.
