BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:Local trio helps Balboa to gold at Junior Olympics

J.B. Green, Connor Bannan and Dylan Davis all helped the Balboa Bay 16 Quiksilver team win the gold medal in the 16 Open Division of the USA Volleyball Junior Olympics on Wednesday .

Green, an incoming junior at Newport Harbor High, as well as Bannan and Davis, incoming juniors at Corona del Mar High, were all named to the division’s All-Tournament Team along with teammate Chris Mamer.

Davis was also named the division’s Most Valuable Player.

Green is a starting outside hitter for Balboa Bay, Bannan a setter and Davis a middle blocker. They helped their team defeat Pali 16 Kaepa in the semifinals, 25-22, 9-25, 18-16 and North Shore (NSMVC) of Milwaukee, 18-25, 25-23, 15-12, in the championship match.

The Balboa Bay squad won 12 matches, winning 24 games and losing just four. The team was coached by Rich Polk and Kevin Welch.

For Polk, it was the second year in a row that his Balboa 16 Quiksilver team won the gold medal. Welch, who graduated from CdM and earned a gold medal while playing for Polk, now plays for Orange Coast College.
