Vail to focus on Aliso for Athens Group

The Athens Group has appointed Laguna Beach resident and former city planning commissioner Greg Vail as director of forward planning and sustainable development.

Vail will manage planning and entitlement responsibilities for the Aliso Creek Area Redevelopment Plan, working closely with John Mansour, vice president of development, according to Athens spokeswoman Joan Gladstone.

Martyn Hoffmann, director of forward planning, will assume increased responsibilities for other Athens Group projects. He will continue to work out of the Laguna Beach office and provide water quality and environmental expertise on behalf of the Aliso Creek Area Redevelopment Plan.

“We are very pleased to welcome Greg to our Laguna Beach team,” Mansour said. “Greg’s in-depth land use and environmental expertise, and deep understanding of and sensitivity to Laguna Beach will be great assets as we move forward with plans for the property.”

Vail is a 28-year resident of Laguna Beach, where he lives with his wife, Lynn, and sons Brian and Billy. Vail served on the Laguna Beach Design Review Board from 1994 to 1996, the city’s Planning Commission from 1996 to 2000, and the Laguna Beach Unified School District construction oversight committee from 2002 to 2004

Vail specialized in wetland restoration and watershed management in graduate school, then managed a complex coastal development project involving a regional park, public marina and wetlands restoration. Later, he was in charge of natural resource management plans and entitlement for several projects where he prepared Habitat Conservation Plans.

He also managed the first resources management plan for Aliso and Wood Canyons Regional Wilderness Park.

Vail has been in real estate with Coldwell Banker for the past 10 years and, internationally, has been chief executive officer of BnV LLC, an Indonesian-American firm he formed in 2002 to promote sustainable development.

Vail has a master’s degree in landscape architecture from Cal Poly Pomona and received a bachelor’s degree in history with honors from Stanford University. He has a planner certification from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
