BREAKING NEWS:

Building Newport Beach’s city hall on an Orange County Transportation Authority park-and-ride site in Newport Center would cost about $10 million more than building on land planned for a park next to the central library, a consultant has determined in a report to the City Council.

A 72,000-square-foot city hall, parking and other work would cost about $55 million, and the same facilities on the park-and-ride site would cost about $65 million, according to the study by DMJM Design. The $65-million estimate includes relocating the transportation authority’s facilities.

Some council members, who don’t want to sacrifice the planned park, say the numbers aren’t conclusive. Councilman Ed Selich pointed out the analysis doesn’t include costs to buy land — either as a place to move the bus facility, or as replacement open space for lost park land.

The council will discuss the figures at a meeting on Tuesday.
