Breakers lose again

RADNOR, Pa. — The Newport Beach Breakers lost all five sets in falling to the Philadelphia Freedoms, 25-16, on Thursday night at Cabrini College.

Newport Beach (3-7) opened the match when legend Pete Sampras fell to Frederic Niemeyer, 5-4. The Breakers’ women’s doubles team of Lauren Albanese and Michaela Pastikova then lost to Philadelphia’s Lisa Raymond and Olga Savchuk, 5-3.

Sampras and Rick Leach lost in men’s doubles, 5-2, to Niemeyer and Daniel Nestor. Pastikova started in women’s singles, and Albanese subbed in but the Breakers lost the set, 5-2, to Savchuk.

Leach and Pastikova then finished the night with a 5-4 loss to Raymond and Nestor.

Philadelphia improved to 5-6.

The Breakers play at Sacramento on Saturday in a match where Lindsay Davenport will play for the Capitals. Newport Beach returns home on Sunday for a rematch with Philadelphia, a match scheduled to feature four-time Wimbledon women’s singles champion Venus Williams.

Billie Jean King, the tennis legend and founder of WTT, is also expected to appear.
