U.S. Open heats up

The waves picked up Tuesday and the action will heat up today as the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing enters its final four days at the Huntington Beach Pier.

At 7 p.m. today, a massive beach cattle drive with 100 steers commanded by 40 cowboys/riders will lumber from Goldenwest Street and Pacific Coast Highway to the U.S. Open of Surfing competition at the pier. The drive is held in conjunction with the Orange County Fair.

At 10 a.m. today, the Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame, the nation’s first sidewalk monument to honor surfing, inducts its 14th class. For more, see B1.

At 10 a.m. Friday, the Surfers’ Hall of Fame, the world’s first imprint collection of legendary surfers, celebrates its 10th anniversary. This year’s inductees are former world champ Sofia Mulanovich, iconic shaper Al Merrick, Pipeline Masters champion Bruce Irons and former world champ Martin Potter. The ceremony will be in front of Huntington Surf & Sport, also at PCH and Main Street.

Today through Sunday, the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing, skateboarding, BMX and FMX competitions will take place south of the pier.
