Beach volleyball workouts offered

Main Beach Laguna Volleyball Club currently is holding summer evening open workouts in Laguna Beach for all high school-aged players.

Workouts, which got underway Monday, will run from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday and Wednesday weekly through Aug. 29. They will be held at both the Laguna Beach High and Thurston Middle School gymnasiums.

Lopes added to biking roster

Laguna Beach resident Brian Lopes has been added to the roster for the 2007 Mountain Biking World Professional Championships, the Jeep King of the Mountain Series announced recently.

The series includes three races from August to September and will be held in the Rocky Mountains and western U.S.

Lopes, 35, has won 18 mountain biking titles: three world, six World Cup series titles and nine national championships.

The King of the Jeep Mountain Series will feature 16 of the world’s top riders competing in head-to-head action as they battle to earn the title of world champion.

Wacholder, Turner fall in final

Rachel Wacholder (Laguna Beach High, 1993) and partner Tyra Turner reached the women’s final of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Long Beach Open Saturday but lost out on the title when the duo fell to No. 1-seed Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh, 21-10, 21-14.

It setback marked the fourth time this season that Wacholder and Turner have lost to May-Treanor and Walsh in a Crocs Series event final.

Wacholder and Turner, the No. 3-seed, advanced to the final by defeating No. 6-seed Jennifer Boss/April Ross, 22-20, 21-12, in a semifinal match.

In the men’s final Sunday, No. 2-seed Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated top-seed Jake Gibb/Sean Rosenthal, 21-16, 19-21, 15-9.

Dain Blanton (Laguna Beach High, 1990) and his partner, Paul Baxter, were seeded 19th but ended up in a tie for 13th-place.

The next series event is the Chicago Open Aug. 2-5.

Summer tennis lessons underway

Summer tennis lessons are underway in Laguna Beach.

Two-week sessions for Pee Wee through Teen, Beginning and Intermediate classes, as well as Competitor Training for players 10-16, will run Monday through Thursday of each week.
