LOCALS IN TITLE HUNT

FRISCO, Texas — Three club soccer teams featuring local players will play for a national crown in the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships today and Sunday.

The Slammer Futbol Club girls’ 18-and-under team play against Bloomfield Force of Michigan today at 8 a.m. at Pizza Hut Park. The team, which won 4-0 Friday, features Corona del Mar High product Taylor Fallon and Jacqueline Zinke of CdM.

The Slammers girls’ 14-and-under team plays today at 9:15 a.m. against Sting Dallas Royal of Texas. The Slammers, who won 2-0 Friday, feature CdM High future freshmen Lindsey Luke, Scarlett Fallon, Tessa Andujar and Jordan Dillion. Renne Mendiola of Newport Beach is also on the team.

The So Cal Blues girls’ 15-and-under team will play in the championship Sunday at 9:30 a.m. against the Fire of New Jersey. The So Cal Blues feature Costa Mesa’s Elizabeth Eddy and Newport Harbor High sophomore-to-be Gillian Hogan.

MAY-TREANOR ADVANCES

GSTAAD, Switzerland — Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh advanced to the semifinals of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball World Championships Friday, keeping pace as they attempt to win their third straight world title.

The defending world and Olympic champions downed Simone Kuhn and Lea Schwer of Switzerland in the first round, then Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder in the second round of the elimination bracket.

Today, May-Treanor and Walsh will play China’s Xue Chen and Xi Zhang in the first semifinal, with the other semifinal match pitting Jia Tian and Jie Wang of China against Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca of Brazil.

Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal are still in the hunt on the men’s side, while Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert and partner Stein Metzger were knocked out with a 21-19, 21-19 loss.
