FRISCO, Texas — It was a rough day to say the least for two teams for the Newport Beach-based Slammers Futbol Club.

Both the 18-and-under and 14-and-under girls’ teams lost in dramatic fashion in their respective title matches of the U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas Saturday.

The Slammers 18-and-under team suffered a 6-5 loss to Bloomfield Force of Michigan in penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie in regulation and overtime.

Bloomfield Force scored in the final minute in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Walid Khoury, one of the founders of the Slammers, said the Force’s Amanda Bowery scored with 30 seconds left.

“To have two teams in the national championship, that’s a fantastic run,” Khoury said in a phone interview. “Sometimes it goes that way. There’s no shame in it.”

Several of the girls on the team, including Taylor Fallon, a Corona del Mar High product, were attempting to win a third national crown.

The team also included Jacqueline Zinke of Corona del Mar.

The Slammers’ 14-and-under team, which won the Gothia Cup last week, lost to Sting Dallas Royal of Texas, 2-1, in overtime. The Sting scored with five minutes left in overtime.

The Slammers team featured Corona del Mar High incoming freshmen Scarlett Fallon, Lindsey Luke, Tessa Andujar and Jordan Dillion. Renee Mendiola, of Newport Beach, was also on the team.

“It was two very good games,” Khoury said. “We were fortunate to send two teams and we ended up with two second-place finishes. I’m really proud of the kids and their accomplishments.”

The SoCal Blues girls’ 15-and-under team, which features locals Elizabeth Eddy and Gillian Hogan, will play in the championship today at 9:30 against the Fire of New Jersey.

Hogan will be a sophomore at Newport Harbor. Eddy attends Calvary Chapel High in Santa Ana.
