NEWPORT BEACH — This Saturday, something unprecedented will happen at Newport Sea Base: six girls will gather to complete the first-ever all-female youth SEAL course.

SEAL (Sea Scout Advanced Leadership) Training is a youth leadership training course offered by the National Sea Scouting Committee.

“We are very excited about having an all-female youth group for SEAL Training — it’s a first,” said Sea Scout Leader Dana McCrae. “Usually the course is co-ed or we get all boys. It’s nice to see more girls trying to complete this very vigorous course while on the water.”

The training, which is at sea, takes one week. The girls start every morning at 6, each taking command of a ship for a day. If they successfully complete the course, the girls will be awarded the SEAL Training Award, one of the highest awards in Sea Scouting. For more on this story, see A4.
