BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:Respectable finishes for local teams in San Jose
SAN JOSE — The Newport Water Polo Foundation’s under-18, 16 and 14 girls’ teams earned solid finishes at the S&R; Sport Junior Olympics Water Polo Championships on Sunday.
The NWPF 12-and-under team finished fifth with a 10-4 win on Sunday. Commerce won the championship for the division.
In the 16-and-under division, NWPF finished seventh with a 6-4 win over Santa Barbara. Los Angeles came away with the title.
The NWPF 18-and-under team, settled for eighth after losing to Chino Hills Water Polo club, 5-4. Santa Barbara was crowned champion in the division.
After losing 4-3, the NWPF 14-and-under team came in 10th. Santa Barbara also won in the division.
The 18s team featured Sailors goalie Morgan Vickers, as well as Mimi Bury, lefty Jessica Robinson and Rosary transfer Nina McCall.
Both the under-18 and under-16 squads were coached by Bill Barnett and Brian Melstrom, who coach at Newport Harbor.
The under-12 girls’ team featured standouts like goalie Tara Jacobsen, and field players Carly Christian and Ally McCormick.
