KIRALY OUT THIS WEEK

Legendary beach volleyball player Karch Kiraly will not compete in the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Manhattan Beach Open this weekend.

Kiraly, 46, is retiring after this season, and was scheduled to play in Manhattan Beach, his last professional appearance in Southern California.

Kiraly pulled his left calf muscle while preparing for the event, and he will not play. Instead, the three-time Olympic gold medalist will be part of the NBC broadcast team. NBC will broadcast Saturday and Sunday, live.

Kiraly, who has won more titles at Manhattan Beach than any other player, said through his spokesman that he still plans on playing in the Boston, Brooklyn and Cincinnati opens but didn’t want to risk a season-ending injury by playing this week.

Kiraly has won more titles (148) than any other player in the history of beach volleyball.
