BEHIND THE HEADLINES MIKE MORGAN

Mike Morgan was sworn in as the Costa Mesa Fire Department’s new chief at the end of July. A 22-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, Morgan served as a battalion chief, firefighter paramedic and urban search and rescue instructor during his time there. He also sharpened his management skills by helping to oversee a department with 161 stations covering 3 million people.

Two weeks into his new job as Costa Mesa’s fire chief, Morgan spoke with the Daily Pilot about his visions for the future.

Q. What inspired you to make the move to Costa Mesa?

A. I was and am very impressed with the sense of pride and mission associated with the Costa Mesa Fire Department and wanted to play a leading role in the continued development of the team and mission.

Q. How is being a fire official in Costa Mesa different from being one in Los Angeles County?

A. Both organizations are exceptional and rich with proven track records of service to the communities they serve. The main difference that I am looking forward to is that the smaller size of the CMFD offers an excellent opportunity to build robust relationships on a personal scale among all department employees.

Q. What have you learned from being a firefighter for 22 years?

A. Humility — and to never stop striving for solutions.

Q. What visions do you have for the Costa Mesa Fire Department in the coming years?

A. I see the department evolving as a cohesive team with strong leaders and continued excellence in service to the community at all levels.
