Costa Mesa to discuss ideas for city fireworks show

Next July 4, Costa Mesa may be like the five other Orange County cities that put on their own community fireworks shows. The City Council today will discuss ideas for a fireworks show and Councilwoman Wendy Leece’s suggestions for tougher enforcement against illegal fireworks.

Leece has suggested stronger penalties and could propose more restrictions on selling the “safe and sane” fireworks that are legal in Costa Mesa. However, the City Council as recently as last week voted not to place a fireworks ban on the ballot for city voters to decide.

The council also will talk about fundraising possibilities for sports groups that now depend on fireworks sales to pay for tournament fees, uniforms and other costs. Today’s meeting, scheduled at 4:30 p.m. at 77 Fair Drive in conference room 1A, will be for discussion only; the council will not vote on fireworks issues.
