Art history class includes field trips

A new class in art history will be offered this fall through Laguna Beach Senior Services and Irvine Valley College Emeritus Institute.

The course will include numerous field trips to local museums, art galleries and artist studios. Discussion topics will include the artist today, trends of art, art styles, art history, exhibits, the jury process, the psychology of art, artist lifestyles and the circle of individuals that assist artists including framers, printers, artist’s representatives, appraisers and conservators. Instructor: Jacqueline Williams.

The class will be held at Lang Park, 21540 Wesley Drive beginning August 24 through December 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. The fee is $2. For registration information, call (949) 464-9535

Opera lecture moved to Aug. 27

Professor Emeritus Doris Leffingwell, an Opera Pacific docent and Laguna Beach resident, will present an introduction to the three operas performed during Opera Pacific’s next season: “La Boheme” by Giacomo Puccini, “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and “Susannah” by Carlysle Floyd.

The lecture, which has been changed from its originally announced time, will be Monday, Aug. 27 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the lower level of the Laguna Beach Senior Center, 384 Legion St.

AARP driver safety course

An eight-hour classroom refresher course especially designed for drivers age 50 and older will be offered by AARP.

Those who complete the course may get an auto insurance discount.

The $10 course will be Sept. 11 and 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the

Laguna Beach Senior Center, 384 Legion St. Checks should be made out to AARP.

Payment and sign-ups must be received at least one week prior to the class start date.

Lunch will be available for those who sign up in advance.

Diet and nutrition class to start

A four-month course in diet and nutrition begins Wednesday , sponsored by Laguna Beach Senior Services and Irvine Valley College Emeritus Institute.

Participants will learn how to pick nutrient-rich foods and a plan that fits their lifestyle, including how to select better food choices without feeling deprived and how to develop a well-balanced plan.

The course will be taught by Susan Miller, who will provide recipes, a meal planner and the tools to get started on a life diet.

The class will be from Wednesday through Dec. 12 from 1 to 3 p.m. at 384 Legion St. The fee is $10.
