City Hall Showdown

The long-running debate over where to build Newport Beach’s next city hall took an ugly turn in recent weeks, with public sniping by City Council members leading to a public apology. Current and former city officials, and residents, are questioning why it’s been so hard to reach a decision, and to do it with civility.

With four possible sites — including the existing City Hall property — it’s not an easy issue to get your mind around. In fact, trying to understand the twists and turns is like peeling an onion — layer upon layer and enough to make some people cry.
