A Costa Mesa teenager drowned this weekend while swimming in a pool at a relative’s apartment complex, police said.

At about 1 p.m. Saturday, Anayeli Medina, 17, was swimming with her 15-year-old niece at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Monrovia Avenue. Neither were experience swimmers, said Sgt. Don Holford.

Anayeli went underwater in the deep end and lost consciousness and sank to the bottom, witnesses reported to police.

The niece ran to get help from a neighbor who then pulled the girl from the pool, police said.

The girl’s brother-in-law unsuccessfully attempted to revive her, Holford said. Anayeli was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, where she died.
