MKSC captures tourney championship in Anaheim
ANAHEIM — The Newport Beach-based Mohammed Khakpour Soccer Club under-14 boys worked some overtime to win a tournament on Sunday.
The MKSC squad used nearly two overtimes to capture the Toyota of Orange tournament title at Magnolia High.
MKSC defeated Cypress FC, 4-2, in a championship match that went into two overtimes. The score was tied, 2-2, after regulation.
MKSC won its first-round match over the Claremont Stars, 9-0, before getting past the La Verne Lasers, 4-2. In the semifinals, MKSC shut out Crown City United, 1-0.
It was a solid group effort from a team that included Austin Armer, Steven Barrera, Drew Blumenthal, Caleb Candelaria, Dara Diba, Matt Francini, Johnny Garcia, Tanner Grandstaff, Matt Laughlin, Peter Marquez, Connor Morrill, Blake Myers, Christian Ochoa, Justin Rhodes, Kent Smith, David Vorona and Eric Zamucen.
The team was coached by MKSC head director Mohammed Khakpour, Bahman Zamanian and Ali Diba.
